The inSight Cards; A Communication design 'issue' based knowledge mapping method

The inSight Cards are modeled on the principle of an issue based 'closed criteria approach' for contextual communication design mapping. It draws on the social implications of semiotics. How sign interpretation is dependent on the contextual representation and interpretation.Visuals are identified within the visual categories of  signified, signifier, interpretation of the audience, issue addressed, perception of issue, perception of causes, perception of impact and suggested solutions related to the issue from the audience (the direct affecters of the issue). Hence this method draws on participatory approaches towards design for specific contexts. This is a strong approach for developing visual communications encapsulating a context specific visual grammar especially in low literacy contexts where written text is less effective than visuals and images. The visual approach drawing on the contextual representations and significations results in an effective and sustainable design approach/results.

Information Design Conference 2012, Greenwich, London.

Looking forward to present:

"Visual dialogues: ‘Pakistani Truck Art’ a metaphoric literacy" at the Information Design Conference 2012, Greenwich, London.

For nearly thirty years, the Information Design Conferences have been a great place to discuss and
debate information design.

The conference is organised by the Information Design Association, and in 2012, for the first time, is in partnership with the International Institute for Information Design.

Information Design Conferences always feature intelligent debate, great networking, a broad set of approaches, and a blend of research and practice.

As in 2007 and 2009, the conference setting is the Restoration grandeur of the University of Greenwich in London, in buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren.

It's a packed schedule, with presenters drawn from 19 different countries, covering themes that include Wayfinding, Infographics, Health information and Collaborative design. Per Mollerup, author of books such as 'Wayshowing and Collapsibles', will be the Keynote speaker.

Graphic design; Vernacular aesthetics as context indicators

The concept of 'aesthetics' re-currently appears as the driving force behind the popular art practices that I explore. They hint subjective aesthetic preferences linked to a universal assumptions of aesthetics in Pakistan. As the practice driven approach of my research investigates various design oriented 'aesthetic' concepts and apparently the  corresponding emotional concepts in Pakistani popular art (cinema art, truck art), it links to the purpose of production, subjective/universal beliefs and world views. This can leads to the development of a specific visual grammar that I, as a graphic designer, am trying to isolate. Hence examining expressive and interactive potential of the popular arts visuals to represent and stimulates emotional response in the public offers a practice-based reflection on the emotional connection of artists with the designed artifacts consequently evoking/reflecting emotions in the viewers.
